Did you know that 95% of supplements on the market are made from “food grade” ingredients?

Coming from a chemistry background (I trained as an organic chemist)  I have extensive experience in the purification of materials, so I am well aware of the difficulty in manufacturing pure chemicals.  Being health conscious, I have always looked to enhance my health with dietary supplements. Over the years, I have learned a few things about the supplement industry, and one fact that shocked me the most when I first learned it was that for a product to be marketed as a dietary supplement means that the active ingredient only has to be “food grade”

In some cases this means that they have no purity criteria at all.  Only that the source of ingredient is considered “safe” and that the end-product contains the amount of ingredient it says it does on the label

Its good to know that there are rules in place to make sure that supplements contain what they say they do.  However, knowing that almost any purity of ingredient can be used does not fill me with confidence.  You should also beware of cheap supplements imported from other countries, where criteria can be even less stringent.  I personally am not comfortable with this, and I take great care to make sure that the supplements I take are at the very least sourced from companies with a known high standard for purity, or ideally I use pharmaceutical grade raw ingredients.

Food Grade ingredients means you could be putting all kinds of impurities into your body.  The vitamin C in a supplement could contain only 50% vitamin C by weight, as long as the other 50% is considered inert.

Many cheap supplements out there use inferior quality ingredients with questionable levels of purity.  It’s also important to remember that there are very few tests done on imported and other supplements in the UK so you have to trust the brand you are buying to be 100% sure of good quality.  Unless a brand says exactly what the purity is of their active ingredients, you are simply guessing.  A good thing to try is to either call or email a supplement manufacturer and ask for a certificate of analysis, you may find it hard to get one!
